Shorter days mean it's time to change up your fitness routine
It’s time to change the clock again and daylight hours are getting shorter. You may find that the change in daylight changes your workout routine, possibly keeping you from heading outside after work or even feeling more fatigue as the days feel shorter. Don’t drop your fitness routine because of the changes. Find a way to adapt to the changes and keep yourself engaged in staying healthy and active.

When working out in a gym or other fitness facility isn’t an option, you can add small activities into your routine throughout the day.

  • Park your car farther away from the entrance to work or the store so that you’ll have to walk just a bit farther.
  • Use the internet as a source for small workout tips or activities that you can do on breaks at work or at home during TV commercials.
  • Walk somewhere at lunch and walk to the water cooler at work to keep yourself hydrated.

Clean your house! You can burn some serious calories while you vacuum. Dance while you dust. Prepare for the holidays with a top to bottom clean of your home.

Work out more intensely in a shorter amount of time. Up the intensity of your workouts and instead of spending 45 minutes working out, you can do it in 30 minutes. Check with a fitness instructor about safely adding this type of workout to your routine.

Wake up earlier than usual so that you can work out before you start your day. Just changing the time of day that you work out can help you to gain benefits that you haven’t seen before.

Keep in mind that changing your fitness routine to fit the seasonal and time changes might be a good thing. The change may help you to learn something new. It may relieve the boredom of your current routine, and it may challenge your body in ways that will help break plateaus. Don’t let the time, darkness, and the colder weather derail your routine!
